Safe Fish to Eat

Safe fish to eat these days is very difficult to come by. The waters have become so contaminated now that it just isn't safe to eat anymore.

Fish, of course, is not technically meat, but I am including a discussion of it because it warrants mentioning. Safe fish would be a great source of nutrients but unfortunately, most of it is so contaminated with mercury that it is no longer a good choice.

My grandparents ran a hunting and fishing lodge in Sopchoppy, Florida for many years and my siblings and I grew up on the wonderful seafood found in the Gulf of Mexico area around there. I don’t eat much from conventional sources any more because it has been so contaminated and therefore safe fish doesn't exist in that context.

This article from Dr. Mercola’s web site addresses this issue:

“According to new U.S. Geological Survey study, scientists detected mercury contamination in every fish sampled in nearly 300 streams across the U.S.

About a quarter of these fish were found to contain mercury at levels exceeding the criterion for the protection of people who consume average amounts of fish, established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. More than two-thirds of the fish exceeded the U.S. EPA level of concern for fish-eating mammals.”

To solve this problem I order my safe fish from the company Vital Choice because it has been third party independently tested and shown to be the most free of mercury. These fish come from the pristine and pure waters off the coast of Alaska and are sustainably harvested.

Their salmon sausages are awesome plus being quick and easy to fix. Their canned tuna and salmon is the best I’ve ever tasted also and makes great tuna or salmon salad. Just eating some once a week gives you great Omega-3 benefits.

You owe it to yourself to give it a try. Click on the picture to go to their site.

To Eat Or Not To Eat Meat

One last subject to cover is whether or not to even eat meat at all. Just like with conventional produce, you simply have to be aware of what’s going on and choose your product accordingly.

Many vegetarians and vegans oppose eating meat on moral or ethical grounds, and I respect that. Unless I were starving, I don’t think I could kill any animal. I’m very grateful that others are willing to do it for me.

However, you kill the vegetables just as much as you do the animals. Just because they can’t scream and run away from you doesn’t mean that they willingly want to be eaten.

Actually, they do scream in their own way. Read the book “The Secret Life of Plants” by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird for an eye opener. I figured I would pick that book up to bore myself to sleep one night but it was fascinating and I couldn’t put it down.

There is also an article from the New York Times on how plants are sensitive to their environment and quickly react to it, using many extraordinary tricks to fend off attackers and solicit help from afar. Go to www.nytimes.com and search for “Sorry Vegans: Brussels Sprouts want to live too” by Natalie Angier.

I personally tried vegetarianism and found that it didn’t work for me. I was constantly hungry and the wheat didn’t agree with me (I later found out I am gluten sensitive) so I had to give it up. Plus I gained weight and was tired most of the time.

For me, I have thrived on the mixed nutritional type diet with small amounts of good, organic meat. I don’t want to eat meat from animals who have been treated so inhumanely, but I go out of my way and spend extra money to get good-for-me kinds of meat.

I have endeavored to give alternatives that take vegans and vegetarians into account and all of my meatless recipes will work well for them. My sincere hope is that there will be something here for everyone.
